TM2023 Press Release – June events in Timișoara

Summer has made its presence felt, and Timisoara opens its doors for a new wave of exceptional cultural events. As the city continues to shine, June brings an explosion of colour, sound and creativity, promising unforgettable experiences for residents and visitors alike. 

The following events are part of  Legacy Timisoara 2023, part of the National Cultural Programme “Timisoara – European Capital of Culture in 2023”. 

The visual arts predominate in the first part of the month. From the 5th to the 16th of June, at Faber – Hala III, the public is invited to discover the exhibition “We are 17”, daily from 14:00 to 19:00.  It explores and celebrates the experiences of adolescence in contemporary Europe through the work of young participants in the “We are 17” Photography Club and Spring School. 

A design exhibition entitled “Designer(s). (Re)designing the world” will take place from the 7th until the 21st of June at Bastion 1. This exhibition will provide a fascinating platform for visitors to discover the innovative work of designers who are redefining and reconfiguring the world. 

From the 7th  to the 30th of June, the Ștefania Palace will host the photography exhibition “Voyage en Roumanie” by artist Mathieu Pernot, as part of the Impuls Festival. The exhibition offers a deep and authentic look at Romania, capturing landscapes, people and memorable moments. 

On the 6th of June, ARChA will stage an interactive theatre show called “In a Forest Thicket”, starting at 9:30 pm. On the same day, a circus workshop will start as part of the event “INSPIR. Impulse in neighbourhoods”, held in Traian Square and Lipovei Area (Martir Alexandru Grama Street), from the 6th to the 15th of June. 

Starting at 22:00 on the 7 th of June, the “HEI x launmomentdat #1” party will take place at Bastion 1, HEI – House of European Institutes. 

On the 8th of June, at 17:00, at Cinema Timiș, there will be a screening of the 1962 film “Mamma Roma”, as part of the “CEAU, CINEMA ITALIANO!” event. 

Embargo Fest, one of the most awaited cultural events in the western part of the country, takes place again in Timisoara. The first part of the festival, on the 8th of June at FITT, will bring the following guests to the audience: the renowned singer, actor and composer Mihai Mărgineanu and Banda, the band Zbogom Brus Li from Serbia with their unmistakable Balkan punk, and the band Hazard, who will perform a folk recital. 

The premiere of Jean-Claude Carrière’s “You take the first step” will take place on the 10th of June at 20:00 in the Capitol Hall of the Banat Philharmonic. A charming and lively romantic comedy exploring the meeting of two completely different people, starring Raluca Aprodu and Marius Călugărița in the lead roles, directed by Andrei Munteanu.  

In the UPT Creative Campus Space, on the 11th of June, starting at 18:00, a workshop will be held with George Rosu on “Written motivations for voting”. 

On the 15th of June, starting at 20:00, at the Victoria Cinema, the public will be able to enjoy a screening of the film “Priscilla”, which tells the explosive love story of Priscilla Beaulieu (Cailee Spaeny) and Elvis Presley (Jacob Elordi). 

Inspired by the French tradition of the Fête de la Musique, the French Institute is organising a concert in the public space of Traian Square. On the 20th of June, from 20:30, the multi-influenced French group “Le Petit Bal de poche” will delight the audience with varied and energetic music, accompanied by singer Nawel Dombrowsky. 

The Simultan Association returns with a new edition of the Sound Narratives event. In 2024, it will take place from the 20th to the 23rd of June in various locations in the Iosefin-Bega area.

On the 21st of June, from 7pm, in the welcoming atmosphere of the TRIADE Garden, the community is invited to enjoy the special concert “Le Petit Bal de Paris”, part of the Neighbourhood Celebration. 

FLIGHT HIDDEN TREASURES II will take place from the 6th to the 24th of June in several locations across the city. This event aims to uncover and reveal hidden treasures from less visited places, but with an important role in Timisoara’s history: Fabric, Iosefin and Cetate. 

The following events are part of Timișoara’s general cultural offer.

In the sphere of visual arts two special exhibitions can be seen during the summer months. The exhibition “Marius Bercea: The Side of Paradise” which will be presented at ISHO House and is open to the public from the 31st of May to the 17th of August, and Andrei Arion’s exhibition, which can be visited from the 21st of June to the 14th of September at Kunsthalle Bega.

The multimedia exhibition “Fabrikage” can be visited from the 4th to the 19th of June at Gallery 5 on Vasile Alecsandri Street. This impressive event is the result of a collaboration between cultural operators from the three European Capitals of Culture 2023. 

On the 6th of June at 19:00, in the Opera Hall of the Romanian National Opera will take place the ballet coupe performance entitled “Prometheus’ Creations / Bodies & Emotions”, the only ballet by Ludwig van Beethoven. 

The “Tectonics of the Clouds” performance by José Rivera and directed by László Bocsárdi will have its premiere on the 6th of June and will be staged again on the 27th of June, starting at 19:30, at the German State Theatre. 

An extraordinary concert will take place in the Capitol Hall of the Banat Philharmonic on the 14th of June, starting at 19:00, performed by the Banat Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Gabriel Bebeșelea. 

On the 14th and on the 15th of June, at 19:00, in the Main Hall of the Hungarian State Theatre “Csiki Gergely”, there will be another premiere, that of the play “DANAOS”, directed by Szabó Kristóf. 

On the 16th of June, at 18:00, in the Opera Hall of the Romanian National Opera, located at 2 Mărășești Street, the musical “The Fiddler on the Roof” will be presented, an extraordinary performance with the participation of actress Maia Morgenstern and conductor Vlad Conta. 

From the 21st to the 23rd of June, the public will be able to enjoy a line-up that will bring to the fore exceptional artists and unforgettable performances, activities and many other surprises during the four days of Flight Festival.  

The end of the month is marked by the 70th anniversary of the German State Theatre in Timisoara. This anniversary will be celebrated with the staging of the play “Leonce and Lena”.
